Please support me in Bike 4 Breath to win the fight against Lung Disease!

Dear friends, family and co-workers,

I want to share two important facts about lung disease:

1) lung disease is the third leading and fastest rising cause of death, and

2) lung diseases and breathing problems are the leading cause of infant deaths in the U.S.

To help address this problem, I've decided to participate in Breathe California's Bike 4 Breath charity ride on Saturday, July 10th in Foster City. Again, I will be riding with Team Sequoia Hospital; and this year as Team Captain!

I've set a personal fund-raising goal of $1,000 and need your help and support to get there! 100% of every dollar I raise will go to support lung disease research, outreach and education, smoking cessation and clean air advocacy in our community. Your support will make a difference in the lives of those who suffer from poor lung health.

It's been a long and sometimes hard road.

Since learning Hannah has asthma, we knew there would be challenging times. For the most part she is a very healthy little girl. However, there are other times when she struggles for breath. Sometimes when we walk to school, she is gasping for air and reaching for her inhaler. One morning, she asked me, "Mom, are you sure walking to school is healthy? Is it good for me to breath in all this pollution (as a large diesel truck sped by)?" I didn't know how to answer her. I knew walking to school was healthy, but I also knew breathing in all those hydrocarbons were exacerbating her asthma. I answered, "It should be."

So I'm asking for your help to make a difference for all those people who suffer from lung disease. Teenage smoking is on the rise. Asthma rates among children are skyrocketing. Lung cancer is the number three cause of death (and the fastest rising). We need to change the tides.

Emilee and Mom fighting lung disease!

Em and I love to bike! We bike for health, for the environment, and for the love of biking. Em is very disappointed that she can't ride in Bike 4 Breath this year. But next year, count on her for the 10 mile loop!

In the past, Breath California has donated money to our San Car-Less Days walk-to-school program, which promotes lung health and clean air for children in our community.
