Suggested Messages for B4B 2015 Fundraising

Download this content as a Word Doc

To help support your fundraising efforts, we’ve created some templates that you can use to begin asking people for donations. Feel free to modify them and make them your own. The most important thing to remember is why you are fundraising. Remember, you’re not asking people to give to you, but to give through you. By fundraising, you are essentially extending an opportunity to others to help support Breathe California’s lifesaving work in the community fighting lung disease, promoting clean air and advancing public health. We all have lungs and we all want to breathe clean air, so let’s get started!

The messages below treat the following topics: Asking for donations, Build your Bike 4 Breath Team, Help me Promote Clean Air, Support me and support Breathe California's work, Thank you for your pledge, Youth focused

Asking for donations

Subject: Help fight the asthma epidemic

Dear friend,

Until recently, I was unaware that asthma is the #1 cause of hospitalizations and school absences among children due to a chronic illness. I also discovered that the number of children dying from asthma has nearly tripled over the last 15 years!

Even more shocking, right here in our own community, children are developing asthma at a much higher rate than previous generations. In San Francisco's Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood, for example, one in six kids has asthma.

To help combat this epidemic, I've decided to raise money for Breathe California by participating in its Bike 4 Breath charity ride on July 11th. I am fundraising for this cause because 100% of all donations made to Breathe California support their life-saving work in the community.

I need your help to reach my personal fundraising goal of $_____. Please visit my personal fund raising web page at __________ where you can make a secure online donation. Alternatively, you can write a check with "B4B" and my name written in the NOTES section to:

Thank you so much for your support of my ride and of Breathe California!

Subject: Join me July 11th at the Bike 4 Breath charity ride!

Dear friend,

I would like to invite you to join me for a very special event: the 24th Annual Bike 4 Breath ride, which takes place on Saturday, July 11, 2015, starting at Menlo-Atherton High School in Atherton.

Bike 4 Breath is a popular event that promotes healthy lungs, clean air and bicycling and helps ensure that we can breathe clean air by supporting Breathe California’s clean air advocacy work. You can choose to ride one of three routes (10, 30 or 64 miles). The routes travel along the Bay, but if you are feeling adventurous, you can ride the 64 mile ride which will be a scenic trip through the rolling hills of the San Francisco Peninsula.

I am riding and fundraising for this cause because 100% of all donations made to Breathe California support their local lifesaving work fighting lung disease, promoting clean air and advancing public health Let's ride together to support lung health in the Bay Area and enjoy a beautiful weekend ride. Help me Promote Clean Air

Subject: Keep Bay Area skies blue!

Dear friend,

I recently learned two important facts: 1) More than half of Americans live in counties with an unhealthy amount of ozone, and 2) Ozone and particle pollution are linked to lung and heart disease in children and adults and also cause increased asthma suffering for people of all ages.

Learning this shocked me, and that is why I'm participating in Breathe California's Bike 4 Breath charity ride on July 11th.

I've set a personal fundraising goal of $____. I want to support them because 100% of all donations made to Breathe California support their local life-saving work in the community. To help me reach my goal, please visit my personal fundraising web page at __________ where you can make a secure online donation. Support me and support Breathe California's work

Subject: Support Breathe California!

Dear friend,

I recently learned two important facts: 1) Lung disease is the second leading and fastest rising cause of death, and 2) Lung diseases and breathing problems are the leading cause of infant deaths in the U.S.

To help address this problem, I've decided to participate in Breathe California's Bike 4 Breath charity ride on July 11th. I want to support them because 100% of all donations made to Breathe California support their local lifesaving work fighting lung disease, promoting clean air and advancing public health. Youth Focused

Subject: Keep our teens smoke-free!

Dear friend,

California has made remarkable progress in reducing tobacco use. This progress is due in part to the efforts of Breathe California, who successfully fought to make our workplaces, restaurants and bars smoke-free and safe for everyone.

But we cannot stop here. Teen smoking rates are still surprisingly high. Currently, 15% of teens in San Francisco County and 11% of teens in San Mateo County actively smoke. Nearly 9 out of 10 adult smokers started by age 18 and the people who started smoking when they were teens are more likely to have trouble quitting than people who start later in life.

That's why I'm participating in Breathe California's Bike for Breath charity ride on July 11th. I want to raise pledges for them because 100% of all donations made to Breathe California support their life-saving work in the community. They also offer free smoking cessation classes and go to schools to educate teens about the dangers of tobacco.

I've set a personal fundraising goal of $_____. To help me reach my goal, please visit my personal fundraising web page at __________ where you can make a secure online donation. Alternatively, you can write a check with "B4B" and my name written in the NOTES section, payable to:

Together we can curb teen smoking and eliminate tobacco-related lung disease in future generations. Thank you so much for your support of my ride and of Breathe California!

Post Suggestions

Sample Posts:

Did you know 100% of all donations made to Breathe California support their efforts to promote lung health right here in the Bay Area?

I am riding in Bike 4 Breath for my 3rd time! This year, I want to raise $5,000 to support Breathe California’s life-saving work in our communities. Help me get there by visiting my personal fundraising page!

Update your status often: Tell your friends all about your training and the fundraising you are doing. When you post messages about the ride, add a link to your personal fundraising page and be sure to include a photo to make the post stand out among the others on their page.

Visuals: Post a picture/video of you riding or even at a previous Bike 4 Breath event. When you let people know about your training and preparation for the ride, they’ll be more likely to give. You can also change your profile picture and cover photos with the Bike 4 Breath or the Breathe California logos.

Share why you are riding: “I’m riding for my sister who was diagnosed with asthma when she was just 10 years old. Please help me by supporting my ride, which helps Breathe California provide assistance to thousands of people suffering from lung related illnesses!

Other Ways to Raise Money

Download this document as a PDF

In addition to asking people for donations, there are other ways that you can add to your fundraising pool. The following ideas can be used to double or even triple your donations.

Rummage Sale

Sales can help you fundraise in many different ways. Plus, you can get rid of some of the things you have laying around the house you don’t need any more like electronics or furniture. Many people choose to gather their belongings and have a rummage sale and simply take the money they make and personally donate it to the event. Another method is to advertise the sale as a way of raising money for charity which can encourage people to purchase something they otherwise may have decided not to. This means you can sell more items and raise more money. You may also want to ask friends and family if they have items that they are looking to sell as well.

Bake Sale

One of the best ways to involve kids in fundraising is selling baked goods. Kids will learn communications and financial skills that are important for when they get older. Whether you make them yourself or are trying to resell store-bought items, people will love to support you. Another variant of the Bake Sale is the Pancake Breakfast.

Car Wash

If you have teenagers who would like to help with raising money, you can put on a car wash. Many people will love to support a good cause and have a cleaner car.

Be Handy

Get you and your volunteers together and sell vouchers for handy services. You can mow lawns, help with repairs, change light bulbs, unclog drains or toilets, or paint a small room. You can sell vouchers door-to-door or through your place of business. Penny Drive

Penny Drives ask people to donate the pennies and spare change that they have lying around as well as any additional money they would like to give. This can make all the difference with someone who doesn’t want to go online to make donations. Penny drives are good fundraisers because they don't make people feel like you are asking too much, but also give them the freedom to give as much as they want.

Matching Donations

Many employers offer a donation matching program for their employees where the company will match a certain percentage of funds that you have raised for a charitable cause. You can talk to your boss and let them know about our breath-saving work in the community. Let them know they have a great opportunity to support lung health and clean air by supporting the company team with matching donations!

Recycling

You can also try setting up a can or bottle recycling bin at local businesses. You can post a sign telling people that they are not only are they helping the environment, but they’re also helping a worthy cause!

Put an article in your local paper

Write an article for a local newspaper talking about the cause, Bike 4 Breath or Breathe California, and ask for donations. Many publications support locals writing stories that they can publish without much effort.

Local Service Clubs

Just because you’re an individual/team raising money, doesn’t mean you can’t ask groups for help. Service organizations such as the Lions Club or Rotary Club may be able to assist you by hosting a fundraising events for you!
